Request a DOI

Use the ‘Select Repository’ dropdown menu to choose the repository that contains the grey literature you want to be assigned a DOI.

Enter the title or persistent link (also called a Handle). A dynamic search of your chosen repository will occur and search results will be displayed. Select your record from the results.

Once selected, details of your record will be displayed. Go to Check details of record.

Can’t find your record?

  • Open UNSWorks, search to find your record, and copy and paste the exact title or persistent link into the DOI Service search box.
  • Select the ‘Browse’ button to search your chosen repository using the parameters ‘Persistent link or title’, ‘Author/Creator’, and ‘Year’.
  • If your record still can’t be found, it may be a resource type that is not eligible for a DOI. See FAQ Why is my item not appearing in Browse?

Check details of record

Once you have selected a record, you will see a summary of the record. Check the details, and if you have made an incorrect selection, close the summary and search again.

It is recommended that DOIs are requested for records with a publication file attached and available for download. An exception to this is resource types where a file cannot be attached (e.g. some creative works). If a publication file is not attached to the UNSW Repository record, and can be attached, please discontinue the request and upload the file through ROS. For guidance on uploading a file through ROS, please contact your Outreach Librarian.

After checking the record summary, go to Review the agreement.

If the record summary does not contain a Publisher you will need to supply information about the publisher manually before progressing to Review the agreement.

If you need to supply Publisher details you will see a drop down menu.

If the resource is in UNSWorks, you can opt to use the default option of ‘UNSWorks, UNSW Australia’. This is the recommended option for theses.

If you prefer, choose ‘Other’ and enter the name of the UNSW Australia entity (Faculty, School, Centre, or Institute) that is named in the work as a publisher or co-publisher, as well as the name(s) of any non-UNSW co-publishers.

Statement Explanation

I am an author/creator of the resource or I have authorisation from an author/creator to request a DOI.

You are the author/creator or you have authorisation from the author/creator to request a DOI.

The resource does not already have a DOI.

The resource does not already have a DOI that has been generated external to the UNSW DOI Service.

Authors/creators do not plan to mint a DOI using another service.

There are other services available that can mint a DOI for grey literature. To continue with the request, you are committing to not creating a DOI for the grey literature through any other service. A DOI is a unique digital identifier. To have multiple DOIs for the same work defeats the purpose of having a DOI.

A UNSW Library repository (e.g. UNSWorks) is the primary publication point for the resource.

The UNSW Library Repository will be considered the primary publication point for the resource, as the DOI will resolve to the UNSW Library Repository record.

The resource is not subject to a permanent embargo.

An embargo is a period of time in which the resource cannot be released publically. To be eligible to have a DOI minted through the UNSW DOI Service the resource can have a temporary embargo, but not a permanent embargo.

The resource is not likely to change significantly. Major changes will require a new DOI.

If the resource is likely to undergo a major change in the future, then wait until those changes have been made before requesting a DOI.

A major change is defined as a change to the attached publication file or any information that would be used in a citation (authors, title, publisher, publication year).

If you make a major change you will need to request a new DOI.

If you have queries about any aspect of the agreement, please contact your Outreach Librarian.

Optional: Add DOI to the publication file

If you select this option, Library staff will open up the file attached to the UNSW Library Repository record and manually add the DOI in the most appropriate place. The DOI will usually be added alongside other publication information.
